UBEC & KOICA Transform Nigeria's Primary Education with Smart Schools
A groundbreaking project between the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) is transforming Nigeria's primary education landscape. Launched in 2021, the initiative aims to tackle critical gaps, including high out-of-school numbers and low teacher digital literacy.
Initially, over 60% of primary school teachers lacked basic digital skills. The project began with 10.1 million out-of-school children and 70% of enrolled children struggling with foundational learning. UBEC and KOICA responded by developing Nigeria's first Smart Education Master Plan and training 300 educators and school leaders.
The collaboration has unlocked matching grants for states after two decades of delays, enabling more efficient resource allocation. Six state-of-the-art content studios have been established, producing nearly 4,000 digital learning resources in Mathematics and Science. Since 2021, 420,009 library materials and 158,000 Nigerian history books have been distributed. The project has benefited at least 3 million children and reached over 8,000 learners in 21 states through six Universal Basic Education Model Smart Schools.
UBEC's vision of a smart, inclusive, and globally competitive basic education system is becoming a reality through this transformative project. KOICA's support has been instrumental in addressing critical education gaps, empowering teachers, and improving learning outcomes for millions of Nigerian children.
