UCLA Students Engage with Local Community Through Music Partnership Program

The UCLA Music Partnership Program (MPP) has returned to full force, bringing the joy of music to students at the Boys & Girls Club of Hollywood. The MPP, part of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, partners with local schools to enrich music education and provide opportunities for students through mentorship and fellowship programs.

In the 2022-23 academic year, 11 UCLA fellows taught 70 students at the Boys & Girls Club, providing instruction in voice, piano, guitar, percussion, wind, and brass instruments. The MPP has served hundreds of students over two decades, instilling a passion for music and fostering technical proficiency and musicality.

The Hollywood Boys & Girls Club hosted a recital where students showcased their new skills on flute, guitar, piano, and voice, having studied their instruments for as little as 10 weeks. The recital was a resounding success, with students overcoming their nerves to put on a great performance.

For the instructor, teaching the students was a highlight of their week. They encouraged students to choose songs they loved best and practice diligently to cover as much material as possible. From the start of the spring quarter, the instructor set a goal for students to prepare for their first ever live music recital.

The MPP instructor found working with other teachers in the program to be inspirational. They expressed gratitude to donors and supporters for making the MPP partnership possible, allowing the Boys & Girls Club to continue providing a valuable enrichment program for afterschool youth despite disruptions during the pandemic.

The UCLA Community Schools, another partner in the MPP, also aim to instill a passion for music in their students. UCLA has three partnership sites: The Boys & Girls Club of Hollywood, UCLA Community School RFK, and Horace Mann UCLA Community School.

The MPP lessons culminate in an end-of-year recital for students to showcase their new skills. The recital is not just a performance, but a testament to the power of music education and the transformative impact of the UCLA Music Partnership Program.
