Stephan Weil Takes on New Role at Georg-August-University Göttingen

Stephan Weil, the former Minister President of Lower Saxony, has been appointed as a member of the Stiftungsausschuss Universität, the central supervisory and advisory board of the University of Göttingen's foundation.

In his new role, Weil, a lawyer by training, will be responsible for advising the university on fundamental strategic questions, supervising and controlling the work of the university’s executive board, exercising legal oversight, and approving the annual financial statements.

The Stiftungsausschuss Universität plays a key role in ensuring quality assurance and transparency in the university's governance. It sets the strategic orientation and supervises critical administrative functions. During a time when the university is undergoing important leadership changes, Weil's prior political and legal experience is expected to contribute valuable expertise to the committee's deliberations and oversight responsibilities.

The committee consists of seven members, five of whom are external experts from academia, industry, or society appointed by the Ministry of Science and Culture (MWK) in agreement with the university senate. Alongside Weil, Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, chairwoman of the German Aerospace Center, Patrick Cramer, president of the Max Planck Society, Verena Lepper, an Egyptologist, and Hagen Duenbostel, an economist, have been appointed to the foundation council.

The re-structuring of the foundation council follows the removal of President Metin Tolan, and the appointment of new members was necessary to fill the vacancies created by the resignation of previous members.

Science Minister Falko Mohrs has expressed appreciation for the new members of the foundation council, acknowledging their contributions to the university's future. Andrea Buhrmann, representing the senate, and Joachim Schachtner, representing the ministry, will continue to be involved in the work of the foundation council.

The University of Göttingen is seeking to set the right course for its future with the new members of the foundation council, as they bring a broad spectrum of expertise and perspectives to the table. The new members' roles and specific areas of expertise beyond their general fields have not been specified at this time.

In his new role with Georg-August-University Göttingen's foundation, Stephan Weil, the former Minister President of Lower Saxony, will provide valuable advice on strategic questions and oversee financial statements, combining education-and-self-development and politics as he contributes to the university's future. During critical times of leadership changes, his extensive legal and political experience in politics and general-news will aid the Stiftungsausschuss Universität in ensuring transparency.
