University of Hamburg tops the list for part-time students

When it comes to part-time students, Hamburg rules the roost! Why's that, you ask? Let's just say Hamburg's got a clear advantage.

Hamburg continues to top the nationwide charts for part-time students. The reason? Hamburg plays host to a plethora of distance learning universities, making it a sweet spot for working professionals seeking higher education. In the upcoming academic year 2023-24, an estimated 25,500 part-time students will be enrolled in Hamburg - that's 21.4% of all students in Hamburg, just 0.4% less than the previous academic year 2022-23. These figures are based on an analysis conducted by the Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung (CHE) in Guetersloh.

The high numbers in Hamburg are largely due to the presence of numerous distance learning universities. These institutions attract a significant number of working professionals. At the HFH Hamburger Fern-Hochschule, for example, an astonishing 98.4% of students are part-time, while the FOM Hochschule für Ökonomie und Management boasts a 96.0% part-time student population. The Europäische Fernhochschule Hamburg, too, has a part-time student population of 49.7%. Across Germany, the CHE survey suggests that more than half of all part-time students are enrolled in private institutions.

Fewer part-time students nationwide

According to the survey, 16 universities in Hamburg host at least 1% of part-time students. In total, 489 part-time programs are offered in Hamburg, making up 62.9% of all programs, a significantly higher proportion than the national average of 19.9%. The only state that offers more part-time programs is Saarland, at 66.7%, but it has the lowest percentage of part-time students nationwide.

North Rhine-Westphalia ranked second in the ranking with 13.5% of students enrolled part-time, followed by Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with 12.2%. Across Germany, approximately 7.6% of the 2.86 million students were enrolled for part-time study. That's about 6,000 fewer part-time students than in the previous academic year. In other words, around one-fifth of academic programs in Germany can be completed part-time.

...but why the dip in part-time students nationwide? Well, let's dive into that, shall we?

Hamburg's advantage in education-and-self-development is evident with the high number of part-time students, largely due to its numerous online-education institutions. These universities offer a wide variety of learning opportunities for working professionals. In the upcoming academic year 2023-24, an estimated 25,500 part-time students will be enrolled in Hamburg, accounting for 21.4% of all students in the city, demonstrating Hamburg's commitment to flexible learning.
