Unrest in education infrastructure: Landelternrat advocates for a 1 billion euro investment in Saxon schools

The Saxony State Parents' Council has taken a bold step in advocating for the political importance of education, highlighting the neglected state of school infrastructure across the nation. Broken schools have become a nationwide symbol of desolate investment policy, and the situation in Saxony is no exception.

The Council is urging for a comprehensive state program, utilising federal special assets, to address this critical need. The focus of this investment plan is centred on education infrastructure, including new buildings, renovations of schools, kindergartens, training facilities, and dormitories. These facilities, the Council believes, should be places where young people can grow up healthily and start their lives with solid knowledge and smart ideas.

The investment backlog in education needs to be effectively eliminated at all levels - state, counties, municipalities. In many cases, the focus is no longer just on new school construction, but also on addressing long-overdue schools. Leipzig, for instance, has concerns about older schools that are straining city budgets.

The Council believes the actual need for investment is significantly higher than currently estimated. As a result, they have demanded a Saxon state program, "Education Infrastructure Saxony 2030", with an investment volume of at least 1 billion euros by 2030.

The decision on a federal special asset of 500 billion euros over the next twelve years will determine central future questions, with education being a top priority. Construction projects should be implemented unbureaucratically, regardless of the financial situation of individual cities or communities. This special asset is an investment in the future of children, their learning conditions, educational biographies, and life paths.

The Saxony State Parents' Council intends to critically and constructively monitor the use of the special assets. However, the current status of the "Education Infrastructure Saxony 2030" program and the specific investment proposal of 1 billion euros remain unconfirmed in the available data up to mid-2025. Consulting official Saxony government publications or education department releases would be necessary to obtain accurate and up-to-date information.

The Council also emphasises the importance of focusing not just on school buildings, but also on health, equal opportunities, and participation. By investing in education and education infrastructure, we are not only improving the physical environment for learning, but also fostering a more equitable and participatory society.
