Video monitoring now installed at entrances to Frankenthaler Gymnasium's restrooms
In response to a series of toilet vandalism incidents that occurred during the previous school year, a camera has been installed at the entrance of a toilet in Caroline High School, Frankenthal. The decision to install the camera was made by the school administration, aiming to prevent further damage and ensure students can use the toilet facilities comfortably.
The vandalism, which caused significant damage to the toilet rooms and sanitary equipment, led to students avoiding the facilities altogether. The vandalism incidents included graffiti on walls, feces smeared, toilets destroyed, and parts of the sanitary equipment stolen.
Principal Christian Bayer expressed concern that students were unable to use the toilet facilities all day due to the vandalism. He also attributed one of the reasons for the vandalism to a TikTok trend involving throwing wet toilet paper at walls.
Attempts to solve the vandalism problem through increasing supervision during breaks and a student beautification project were unsuccessful. However, parents and student representatives agreed to the installation of the camera, with deputy school speaker Michaela Kämmerr emphasizing that the intimacy and privacy of students should not be violated during the camera installation.
The camera was installed at the beginning of the new school year, about a month ago. It is located at the entrance to a toilet and records video material that is stored for three days. The recordings are only viewed in case of a specific incident.
The video material is evaluated according to the 'four-eye principle', meaning there must always be a second person present during the evaluation. Only the principal and the data protection officer have access to the technical room where the camera recordings are stored.
It's important to note that there are other toilets in the school building that are not under video surveillance. The city of Frankenthal and the school management collaborated to install the camera in an effort to create a safer and more conducive learning environment for students.
Principal Bayer expressed hope that the installation of the camera will help to address the toilet vandalism problem and ensure that students can use the facilities without fear or discomfort. The school administration will continue to work with students and parents to maintain a positive and safe learning environment at Caroline High School.
