Diving Into the Past: Exploring National Socialist Memorial Sites Across Bavaria with a Mobile App

Looking for a unique and engaging way to step back into history? The BayernHistory app, available now, has just the thing for you. Navigate through the annals of time and uncover the era of National Socialism by visiting various memorial sites scattered across Bavaria.

The app is here to shed light on historical locations that may have otherwise fallen into obscurity. According to Wolfgang Hauck from the KunstBauStelle in Landsberg am Lech, the idea behind the project is to bring visibility to these sites, enticing people to explore their rich history. The focus is particularly on the younger generation to foster critical thinking and boost civic society involvement.

This isn’t just an expansion of the BayernHistory app—it’s a complete game-changer. The app has been updated with a third pillar, which exclusively centers on the time between 1933 and 1945. The new section also covers the path to National Socialism and the post-1945 processing of National Socialist injustice.

The app provides a plethora of resources to enrich your journey, such as texts, photos, videos, audio recordings, and podcasts that tell the stories of victims and survivors. You'll also find multimedia tours, interactive formats, and even virtual reality experiences. Digital exhibitions previously displayed in museums have been included to prevent their loss to history.

The project boasts an impressive roster of partners, including the Bayern memorial sites, historian Edith Raim, the city of Landshut, numerous volunteers, and the BerlinHistory association. The initiative has received a generous 100,000 euros in support from the Deutsche Stiftung für Engagement und Ehrenamt.

As you travel and uncover these historical sites—from well-known institutions to lesser-known locations like a street sign with an intriguing backstory—you’ll feel empowered with the knowledge that history happened everywhere. Impart massive synchronous learning with tools like a mobile phone and remember: when you pass by, you can always discover—something happened here.
