Women in Romania now have access to a complimentary financial education platform specifically designed for them, thanks to FeminEast's initiative.
In a significant stride towards financial empowerment, a team of young women have developed a groundbreaking digital platform, aimed at providing accessible and practical content to schoolgirls, students, mothers, and women seeking financial independence or career changes. This platform, named FeminEast, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting financial education as a form of empowerment for women in Eastern Europe.
The platform, which is now live, offers a friendly and approachable way to familiarise oneself with topics surrounding financial independence. It is designed to be a simple starting point for women to learn about financial management, with all modules being free and accessible to users regardless of their prior financial knowledge.
A recent survey conducted by FeminEast revealed some striking findings. One in three young people in Romania have unanswered questions about money management, and among young women aged 16 to 30, over half do not know how to create a personal budget. Moreover, 27% of young people struggle with impulsive spending, and 15% cite lack of financial education as a significant obstacle.
The platform aims to address these issues by offering practical tools and promoting a more empathetic relationship with money. It seeks to build confidence in its users through the information gained throughout the modules.
Women in Romania hold just a third of leadership positions in the country, according to the NGO. This gender imbalance, coupled with the complexities and perceived inaccessibility of the financial world, often leaves women feeling financially vulnerable, particularly during life events such as divorce, motherhood, or relocation.
FeminEast is not alone in its mission. The World Bank is actively working across Eastern Europe and Central Asia to unlock women's economic opportunities. However, while these initiatives have reached tens of thousands of women with skills and business grants, they do not specifically focus on a digital platform for young girls and women in Romania or Eastern Europe.
The FeminEast Association continues its mission to help women regain control over their financial futures. As Cristina Pogorevici, one of the association's founders, stated, the platform was created with the belief that every woman has the right to understand and control her own financial decisions. Miruna Neamu echoed this sentiment, stating that the platform aims to give users confidence through the information gained throughout the modules.
The European Commission's figures show that only 20% of Romanians meet the minimum criteria for financial literacy. By providing a free, accessible platform, FeminEast is working to bridge this gap and empower women to take control of their financial futures.
