Yucatan Health Official Accused of Extortion, Business Groups Demand Justice
Business groups are calling for transparency and swift justice in the wake of allegations against a senior official from the Yucatán Health Secretariat. The official, whose name has not been disclosed, is accused of extortion and abuse of authority following an inspection of a local restaurant in Mérida on September 12, 2025. The Yucatán State Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the matter. The restaurant, in turn, has filed a public complaint against the official's actions. According to reports, Abraham Antonio Puch Cardeña, Deputy Director of Health Control and Promotion, allegedly demanded $520,000 pesos to lift the closure and $30,000 pesos monthly for future 'protection'. The inspection led to the arbitrary closure of the restaurant with fabricated violations and falsified test results. However, the restaurant refused to succumb to the demands and opted for a legal fine of $490,000 pesos instead. The alleged actions of the official have drawn strong reactions from business organizations, who are demanding transparency and swift justice. The Yucatán State Prosecutor's Office continues to investigate the matter, and the restaurant awaits the outcome of the probe.
